Montenegro joined the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in 2023 and serves on the Biogas Subcommittee. 

Montenegro is actively working to reduce methane emissions by enhancing waste management, promoting sustainable agriculture, and increasing the use of biogas. These efforts, along with participation in international initiatives, demonstrate Montenegro’s commitment to addressing methane emissions and aligning its strategies with global climate goals.

Methane Emissions Summary

According to the Montenegro Third National Communication on Climate Change, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and published in 2020, methane emissions accounted for a significant amount of Montenegro's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Most of Montenegro’s GHG emissions come from the agriculture, energy, and waste sectors.

Methane Commitments and Plans

Methane mitigation efforts in Montenegro are guided by national and international commitments and plans. Montenegro also engages in partnerships dedicated to addressing methane.

Montenegro has multi-sectoral strategies to achieve methane emissions reductions.

International

Montenegro participates in collaborative international efforts to implement activities focused on reducing methane emissions. 

  • In 2022, Montenegro joined the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), agreeing to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
